988 is now active across the United States. This new, shorter phone number will make it easier for people to remember and access mental health crisis services.
When people call, text, or chat 988, they are connected to trained counselors that are part of the Lifeline network of over 200 called centers with trained counselors. These trained counselors will listen, provide supports, and connect the caller with supports needed.
Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide, including those who have experienced a loss through scientific research, education, advocacy, and support of survivors of suicide loss.
AFSP has chapters in all 50 states and hosts local chapter events, trainings, and Out of the Darkness Walks.
